Threads Character Limit: Every Limit You Need to Know
Threads posts are capped at 500 characters. Here are the other limits, from polls and topic tags to carousels, and how to say more when 500 isn't enough.
A Threads post can be up to 500 characters long. That's the limit that matters most, but it isn't the only one. Here's every limit worth knowing when you write and schedule posts.

What counts toward the 500 characters
- Letters, numbers, spaces and line breaks all count.
- Links count toward the limit, so a long URL eats into your post.
- Emoji count too. Keep a little headroom if you use several.
The quickest way to check is to paste your draft into our free Threads character counter. It shows how many characters you have left and a preview of the post.
How to say more than 500 characters
1. Write a chain
Split a longer idea into a series of posts, each replying to the one before. Chains read naturally on Threads, and every post in the chain is a new chance to be seen. Our thread splitter breaks long text into numbered posts at sentence boundaries.
2. Attach long text
Threads lets you attach a longer block of text to a post, shown as a card readers can expand. It's useful for a story or a how-to that would be awkward to chop into pieces.
3. Use an image
A screenshot of notes or a simple graphic can carry detail that doesn't fit. Add alt text so everyone can read it.
Short usually wins
The limit is a ceiling, not a target. Many of the best-performing posts are one or two lines. If a post feels crowded, try cutting it in half before splitting it in two.
